Buying guide for beginners to buy a rifle for the first time

It is no doubt that a person hoping to buy their first air rifle, maybe for hunting, will be spoilt for choice due to the wide variety of air rifles in the market. This is especially so if the person has no clue of what they want in an air rifle or if they have not sought professional guidance on purchasing one.

The following are tips that will be useful to a beginner wishing to get an air rifle that suits them best.

Hunting needs
The first and most important part of deciding the kind of air rifle you want to buy is deciding what kind of animals you want to hunt. You will find that different air rifles have uses and apply better to a certain kind and size of prey. For smaller animals, you will definitely have no need for higher caliber rifles. The Gamo Big Cat 1200 is a good example of a small caliber rifle that can be used for animals such as rabbits and birds. For bigger animals you will need a larger caliber rifle. Larger caliber rifles have more power and the ability to take out larger, for example the AirForce Condor PCP Air Rifle would be better that the Gamo Big Cat 1200 if your target is a coyote.

Distance to be covered
Another factor to consider and you should use to guide you when getting an airgun is the distance of the target that you intend to be. Different air guns have different ranges. According to the distance they are able to fire over, air rifles can be classified as being either light, medium or high. To give you an idea of the choice to make, if your targets are going to be below 40 yards away, a light air rifle is ideal for you. If you will be shooting at targets between 40 yards and maybe 55 yards, then you should consider a medium range air rifle. For targets over 55 yards away, a high rifle is best.

Weather conditions
Another important feature is to know in which weather condition your rifle would perform as expected. It’s because if the rifle is unable to perform in extreme conditions like rainy weather or extreme heat, then you will not be able to use it in any condition you have planned to hunt. You will have to consider the weather factor before going for a hunt. In order to have rifle that works in any condition, you should check  this feature first before you buy.

Rifle scopes
A rifle scope that provides a clearer and more accurate view would definitely be a plus for you. If you have got a best rifle scope in your selected rifle, then you have got the best rifle with you.

This should narrow down your search.  Next, read reviews and specifications about air rifles online if you have a narrowed down to certain types of air rifles. There are many blogs and websites with air rifle reviews that will inform you of the pros and cons of most air rifles.

The main advantage of this air rifle is that it is easy to use. No pumping is required. Additionally, it is available in different shapes and sizes hence you have a variety to choose from. The sizes range from 12 to 88 grams. Nonetheless, they are expensive because they use CO2 canisters which are costly to obtain. They CO2 canisters are disposable thus you dispose once you use them. Advancement of technology has resulted in semi automation of the CO2 powered rifles. A good example of this is the Crosman 1077 air rifle.

Pneumatic air rifle

There are mainly two types of pneumatic rifles they are pump-up and pre-charged. The difference comes in with the way they are operated.

Pump-up

Pump-up mainly comprises air mainly using a built in pumping lever. Because of this they are very powerful. However, for them to be effective much effort is required. They are not also effective for hunting because of the noise. You have to pump them for each and every shoot.

Pre-charged pneumatics

They are extremely powerful when using them. Most of them are made from high quality materials. Additionally, they can operate automatically thus they do not require much effort. They are also accurate when you use them. The major drawback is the high initial cost which is very high.

Spring Piston

This is another type of air rifle which is very easy to operate. When it is fired the spring simply pushes the piston forward. This propels the charge of the air into the main barrel. They are very accurate and powerful in operation. When using this type of air rifle there are three main 'mechanisms of cocking. They are under lever, barrel and side cocking. All the methods depend on the placement of the lever. However, side and under lever is the most accurate. The main drawback is that it is costly to acquire.
